The Grotto Now Offering Less at Breakfast
Breakfast used to be the most important meal of the day. This all changed for students at Franklin last week, when the Grotto began enforcing a three-item breakfast policy. The policy, that has always been in the Grotto's contract, yet not enforced, permits students on the meal plan who have prepaid 10 CHF only three separate breakfast choices.
Three choices for an average student could mean purchasing yogurt, a croissant, and water. This combination, if paid for separately, is only 3 CHF. The Grotto would then profit 7 CHF and provide less food. Freshman on the meal plan were informed at student orientation that they would be better off getting lunch and dinner, as there will be more food provided.
This change in policy came in lieu of a meeting between Student Assembly representatives, Grotto management, and Franklin administration. Angela Dansie, at large student representative, who attended the meeting explained, “Vitto [The Grotto manager] responded it was not a good deal for students to get breakfast on their meal plans.”
Fortunately for students, this year's Student Assembly has been more active than in recent years. Otto Wahi, Student Liaison to the Grotto, is currently working on finding alternatives to the Grotto. In addition, flyers around the school have been asking for student reports against the Grotto and informing students of unclear Grotto policies, such as the salad bar.
With a more active Student Assembly, Dansie hopes this year to “Initiate reform, ensure that the concerns of the student body are not dismissed, but fully understood and addressed.” Working hard at this goal, Student Assembly hopes to make breakfast once again the most important meal of the day.
