Student Assembly Passes Globus Travel Resolution
As some of you may already know, Student Assembly has passed a resolution that would encourage the College to re-evaluate its contract with Globus Travel.
In a vote last Tuesday, Student Assembly approved Vice President Jarett Gilbert's motion to add a fifth clause onto a resolution concerning the College's contract with Globus Travel. Gilbert said, “[The additional clause] would allow us to take action if the students and faculty are not satisfied with next semester's Academic Travel arrangements.”
The resolution was drafted after President Marcel Ricou presented to Student Assembly complaints regarding this semester's Academic Travel programs. It is intended to state the Assembly's current opinion regarding the contract between Franklin and Globus, and offer recommendations to the administration on what actions they should take if the opinion of Globus does not improve next spring.
Globus is currently responsible for all business travel done by the College, including transportation and lodging for Academic Travel. They do not organize the actual programs on Travel.
Marta Oprisan, the R.A. Representative, raised concerns about whether the one-year provisional contract is actually beneficial to the College. President Ricou pointed out that the arrangement with Globus helps control the Academic Travel budget and releases each Travel leader from the obligation of organizing the logistics of the trip; however, if the professor wants to use local connections to make arrangements, he or she is unable to do so.
The resolution was to be passed on for review by the Faculty Assembly in its November 16th meeting.
