Jazz Night

The third annual Jazz Night was a successful beginning to the Spring 2006 semester, thanks to a high student turnout and excellent planning by Student Assembly. On January 20 at 8 o’clock sharp, the Falcon’s Nest was transformed into a jazz lounge, with a full-service bar (well, almost), hors d’oeuvres, and candle-lit ambiance, all free of charge.

Nearly half of the student body showed up to the social event dressed to impress in suits, tuxedoes, and sparkling gowns, and mingled with old friends and new faces. Cocktail waitresses served homemade bruschetta, an assortment of cheeses, vegetables with dip, and bite-size pizzas, while the bartenders mixed martinis and gin-tonics.

The theme of this year’s Jazz Night was “James Bond,” although there was little present to indicate the theme. “It was a late decision that didn’t get communicated well,” explained Student Assembly President Marcel Ricou. This did not affect the night’s success, however.

“It is a good welcome back event,” Ricou continued, “It's fun and free, and allows new students, study-abroads, and freshmen to meet and integrate with returning students.”

Jarett Gilbert, who deejayed the event, said, “Jazz Night was truly enjoyable – laid back yet very chic. Between the music and the dress, I think Bond himself would have approved.” The musical lineup featured Frank Sinatra, Michael Bublé, and Billie Holiday. Later in the night Gilbert switched to more popular hip-hop and dance music, and the dance floor overflowed until clean-up began slightly before midnight .

The next Student Assembly event will be the annual Super Bowl Party on February 5 in the Falcon's Nest.
