The New Enlightenment!

Within the span of a year, the Enlightenment fell somewhere between 'good', 'weird' and 'bad.' I'll have you know that things are in the process of changing. Scott Wade and I have decided to make the Enlightenment part of your lives again. We are your new Editors in Chief. This means that we can effectively control people's right to free speech and turn the 'Op-Ed' section into a crushingly soulless Orwellian dystopia which I rule from my secret lair with an iron fist, turning Franklin's citizens into automatons who have had any desire to reclaim their own sovereignty of action and free will sapped from them by my brutal and heartless totalitarian regime. I will not find it hard to believe that by next month, the Enlightenment would serve as the highlight of your existence at Franklin College.

This paper is not only a comprehensive summary of what this school has been up to. Soon, we may finally be the subject of academic discourse! That's right, our staff may be recognized for exploring psycho-physical challenges and partaking in the challenging dialectic about the symbolism of war and its Freudian overtones. Rather than, as you thought, being a bunch of students messing around.

Just in case you wanted to know, there are several great features of the new Enlightenment. First, the tabs on top let you navigate to the different sections of the newspaper. Then, the right hand column includes even more interesting stories and when you hover your mouse over them, you can see a brief desctiption of each. Underneath that are special sections of The Enlightenment, including a behind the scenes look at the grotto. So take a look around and familiarize yourself with the NEW Enlightenment!

Jazz Night

The third annual Jazz Night was a successful beginning to the Spring 2006 semester, thanks to a high student turnout and excellent planning by Student Assembly. On January 20 at 8 o’clock sharp, the Falcon’s Nest was transformed into a jazz lounge, with a full-service bar (well, almost), hors d’oeuvres, and candle-lit ambiance, all free of charge.

A Ribbon is Cut

The New Campus: LDVOn Monday, January 23, 2006 the new LDV building, or ‘North Campus’, was officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony- though this may come as a surprise to those students who have been attending class in the LDV classrooms for the past week.

I Spy with my Little Eye...a load of rubbish.

One day during break, I took a break from watching wasp larvae destroy caterpillars from within on Animal Planet to watch the news. To be honest, it wasn't due to some deep seated desire to know what was going on in the world around me; rather I had missed the day's soccer games and wanted to know the scores. So I switched over to Sky News. It turns out I was about 15 minutes early for the sports news.

Peace Building Through Public Opinion

Dr. Morris Mottale, a Franklin College Professor, sat between the Palestinian and Israeli negotiators last Monday, but not because the meeting was contentious. In fact, Drs. Samih El Abed and Avi Primor seemed to agree on most everything, much to the dismay of the audience. In response to the question, “Is there anything on which you don't agree?” the two chuckled, consulted and quickly proceeded to the next question.
